## **Overview**

Many couples prefer to live together in long-term relationships without being married. However, unlike marriage or civil partnerships, cohabiting couples do not automatically have the same rights and protections as married couples when they separate, especially in respect of pensions, lump sums or maintenance from their former partners except where the lump sums or maintenance is for a child.
